Latitude | Himalayas | Land-Water | Distance from Sea | Jet Streams

To understand India's climate, knowledge of the "monsoon" alone is not sufficient. India's climate is the result of the combined action of latitude, altitude, land-water distribution, the Himalayas, distance from the sea, relief, pressure, wind circulation, and oceanic-atmospheric phenomena.

1. Latitudinal Position

India extends approximately from 8°4′ N to 37°6′ N latitude. The Tropic of Cancer (23°30′ N) passes through almost the middle of India. As a result, both tropical and sub-tropical characteristics appear in India's climate.

2. Influence of the Himalayas

The most important geographical factor controlling India's climate is the Himalayas. It separates India from the vast continental landmass to the north and acts as a major geographical barrier for monsoon winds.

Effect 1
Blocking Cold Winds
Protects from harsh Central Asian cold — North Indian winter less severe

3. Distribution of Land and Water

India is surrounded by sea on three sides — Arabian Sea in the west, Indian Ocean in the south, Bay of Bengal in the east. A vast landmass lies to the north.

Land
Heats fast + Cools fast
जल
Water
Heats slow + Cools slow

This creates a temperature and pressure difference between India and the surrounding oceans seasonally — forming the basis for the seasonal reversal of monsoon winds.

4. Distance from Sea and Continentality

In areas near the sea, the temperature-moderating influence of the sea is greater — called the maritime influence. In interior areas far from the sea, this influence decreases and continentality increases.

5. Relief and Orientation of Mountains

When moist winds strike a mountain, they are forced to rise — called orographic/relief rainfall.

7. Wind Circulation

Winter Western Disturbances bring winter rainfall to north-west India and snowfall to the western Himalayas — important for Rabi crops (wheat).

9. Tibetan Plateau

Intense heating of the Tibetan Plateau in summer significantly affects the South Asian monsoon. It is considered an important component in the thermal and dynamic explanation of the Indian monsoon.

⚠️ Myth

"The Tibetan Plateau alone produces the monsoon." — False. It is one of many factors in the monsoon system.

10. Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ)

The zone where NE and SE trade winds converge. In summer, with the sun's northward movement, it shifts northward. Low pressure over South Asia and the position of the ITCZ support monsoon circulation.

11. Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)

Related to the difference in sea surface temperature between the western and eastern tropical Indian Ocean. When the western Indian Ocean is relatively warm and the eastern part is relatively cool, it may support the Indian monsoon. IOD should be read along with ENSO.

12. Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO)

An eastward-moving atmospheric convection system in the tropical belt. It can influence monsoon rainfall on a time scale of roughly 30–60 days.

13. Tropical Cyclones

They can form in both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. Historically more frequent in the Bay of Bengal. Effects — heavy rainfall, strong winds, coastal floods, damage to agriculture and infrastructure.

14. Ocean Currents

They affect coastal temperature and humidity. The main explanation of the Indian monsoon cannot be given by ocean currents alone, but Indian Ocean currents are important for the monsoon system.

Local pre-monsoon rainfall in some parts of South India, especially in Kerala and Karnataka. It is considered helpful for the ripening of mangoes.

Coffee Blossom Showers

In South India, especially in the coffee-growing regions of Karnataka, pre-monsoon rainfall is important for flowering in coffee plants.

South-West Monsoon Season (June – September)

The most important season of India's climate. A large portion of India's annual rainfall is received during this period.

Two Major Branches
  • Arabian Sea Branch
  • Bay of Bengal Branch

Onset — Generally it establishes first on the Kerala coast, then moves to other regions. Not on exactly the same date every year.

Active Monsoon — When rainfall activity is strong. Monsoon Break — A broad decrease in rainfall activity for some days.

Monsoon Depression — Low-pressure systems forming over the Bay of Bengal that move east to west/north-west and bring rain to interior regions.

Retreating Monsoon (October – November)

After September, the sun's position begins to move southward, and the landmass gradually cools. The retreat of the monsoon generally begins from north-west India and moves towards the south-east.

October Heat — Temperature is still high, humidity persists, winds are weak, and the combination of sunshine and humidity creates uncomfortable weather.

North-East Monsoon — Winds blowing from land to sea pick up moisture while crossing the Bay of Bengal. This brings significant rainfall to Tamil Nadu and the south-eastern coast.

Thermal + Dynamic | ITCZ | Tibetan Plateau | Mascarene High | Jet Streams

Understanding the Indian monsoon is central to geography. The monsoon is not merely a name for seasonal rainfall; it is a combined system of land-sea thermal contrast, pressure distribution, ITCZ shift, seasonal wind reversal, the Tibetan Plateau, jet streams, cross-equatorial flow, and oceanic-atmospheric circulation.

What is the Monsoon?

The word "monsoon" is believed to be derived from the Arabic word mausim, meaning season. Geographically, a monsoon is a seasonal wind circulation in which there is a marked reversal of wind direction at different times of the year.

🔎 Limitation of the Thermal Concept

Saying only "hot land + low pressure = monsoon" is not sufficient in the modern view, because Earth's rotation, the Tibetan Plateau, jet streams, upper-atmospheric circulation, cross-equatorial flow, and oceanic conditions are also important in the Indian monsoon.

ITCZ की भूमिका

Role of the ITCZ

The zone where tropical trade winds converge. It is not stationary. With the sun's northward movement, it shifts north in summer. In the summer season, it shifts northward towards South Asia. Along with it, the low-pressure zone and the ITCZ also shift northward.

Monsoon Trough and ITCZ

Over the Indian subcontinent, in summer it appears as the broad monsoon trough. It is linked with a low-pressure belt extending from north-west India, across the Ganga plains, towards the Bay of Bengal.

Role of the Tibetan Plateau

In summer it becomes extremely hot. This heating of the Tibetan Plateau, along with changes in upper-atmospheric circulation, creates favourable conditions for the South Asian monsoon. It is considered an important component in the modern dynamic explanation of the monsoon. But the Tibetan Plateau is not the sole cause of the monsoon.

Mascarene High

An important high-pressure system in the sub-tropical region of the southern Indian Ocean, called the Mascarene High. It plays a key role in the development of cross-equatorial flow over the southern Indian Ocean.

When southern hemisphere winds cross the equator into the northern hemisphere, their direction changes. This process is crucial in the formation of south-western monsoon winds.

Somali Jet

A strong low-level wind flow develops over the Arabian Sea region, called the Somali Jet or Findlater Jet. It is related to the strong low-level flow from the south-western Indian Ocean towards the Arabian Sea and the Indian subcontinent. It provides moisture to the Arabian Sea branch.

Arabian Sea Branch | Bay of Bengal Branch | Rain Shadow | Comparison

The south-west monsoon does not enter India from a single uniform direction. Due to the geographical position of the Indian subcontinent, the location of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, and mountain barriers, its flow is understood mainly as two major branches.

📌 Basic Structure

After the monsoon establishes, moist south-western winds coming from the Indian Ocean move towards India. These are not two completely independent monsoons, but major branches of one broad south-west monsoon circulation.

Heavy Rain

Therefore, heavy rainfall occurs on the windward side of the Western Ghats.

Special Significance of the Aravalli Range

The Aravalli is important for understanding Rajasthan's climate. Its general direction is south-west to north-east. Its orientation relative to the general direction of south-west monsoon winds is such that, unlike the Western Ghats, it does not form a continuous high barrier to produce widespread orographic rainfall. Hence, monsoon rainfall remains limited in a large part of Rajasthan.

⚠️ Important

The Aravalli direction is parallel to the monsoon winds — hence it cannot act as an effective barrier like the Western Ghats.

Bay of Bengal Branch

Moist winds coming from the Bay of Bengal reach north-east India. Ascent occurs in front of the Meghalaya hills.

Very Heavy Rain

The combined effect of relief + monsoon moisture is crucial in understanding the heavy rainfall of this region.

Westward Turn of the Bay Branch

After entering north-east India, a major current of the Bay of Bengal Branch moves west/north-west along the Ganga plains.

North-West India

The amount of rainfall generally decreases towards the west, because the moisture of the monsoon winds progressively decreases.

Relationship Between the Two Branches

It should not be assumed that the two branches move completely independently over India. The monsoon is an integrated circulation system. Both branches are complementary, are influenced by the monsoon trough, are influenced by relief, and are influenced by the routes of monsoon depressions.

Effect of Distance on Monsoon Rainfall

Generally, when moist monsoon winds travel a long distance over land, their water vapour reserve decreases. Hence, rainfall tends to decrease with increasing distance from the moisture source. But this should not be treated as an absolute rule, because relief and local factors can modify it.

Part 7 — Advance and Retreat of the Monsoon
Onset | Advance | Retreat | Tamil Nadu Exception

The onset of the south-west monsoon in India is a gradual process. The monsoon does not arrive in the whole country at once. Similarly, its retreat does not occur all over India at once, but generally begins from north-west India and moves towards the south-east.

Meaning of Monsoon Advance

After the south-west monsoon enters India, its gradual spread over different regions is called the advance of the monsoon. Understand it through three processes — onset, advance, nationwide establishment.

Onset of the Monsoon

The south-west monsoon generally establishes first on the Kerala coast. In Kerala, the normal onset is considered to be around 1 June. But this is an average normal date, not a fixed annual date.

Onset in Rajasthan

The onset of the monsoon in Rajasthan does not occur simultaneously in all parts of the state. Generally, the monsoon effect extends from south-east/eastern Rajasthan towards western Rajasthan. The advance of the monsoon in Rajasthan should not be understood as a simple straight line.

Complete Establishment of the Monsoon

During June, the monsoon spreads across various parts of the country and generally establishes over a large part of the Indian subcontinent by early July. But the date of complete monsoon establishment is not the same every year.

Monsoon Break

During the monsoon the situation does not remain static. It may have active phase → break → active phase again. Hence, after the monsoon arrives in a region, some days of low rainfall are still possible.

Retreat of the Monsoon

After September, the sun's position begins to move southward. The Indian landmass gradually begins to cool.

Monsoon Retreat Begins

Generally, the retreat of the south-west monsoon begins from north-west India.

North-East Winds After Retreat

As the south-west monsoon retreats, the influence of north-east winds increases over the Indian landmass. These winds generally blow from land to sea. But while crossing the Bay of Bengal they may pick up moisture.

This is an important exception to the Indian monsoon system. North-east winds move from the Indian landmass towards the Bay of Bengal. After picking up moisture from the Bay of Bengal, they return towards south-eastern India. This brings significant rainfall to Tamil Nadu and the south-eastern coast. It is associated with the north-east monsoon.

Monsoon Retreat and Cyclones

In October-November, cyclones may develop in the Bay of Bengal. Therefore, during the retreat period, cyclonic rainfall can be significant in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal.

Convectional Rainfall

When the Earth's surface heats up rapidly, the moist air in contact with it becomes warm, lighter and rises. As the altitude increases, its temperature falls, leading to condensation and possible rainfall.

Where in India?

Eastern India, north-eastern India, some parts of the Ganga plains, and other hot and humid regions. Especially, vertical convection produced by intense afternoon heat can generate local thunderstorms and rainfall.

Related local storms — Kalbaisakhi, Mango Showers, Coffee Blossom Showers.

Orographic or Relief Rainfall

When moist air strikes a mountain or a high landform and is forced to rise, its ascent causes cooling and condensation, resulting in rainfall.

Windward and Leeward Slope

Windward Slope
The slope from which moist air approaches the mountain. Generally, vertical ascent, more condensation, more rainfall.
Leeward Slope
The slope on the other side of the mountain, where air descends. Descent, compression, temperature rise, lower relative humidity, less rainfall.

Therefore, a rain shadow can develop in the leeward region.

Key Examples of Orographic Rainfall in India

Western Ghats
SW monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea strike the Western Ghats. Heavy rain on the windward western slope; rain shadow to the east.
Meghalaya
Moist winds of the Bay of Bengal branch reach NE India and are affected by the mountainous relief. Khasi, Jaintia, Garo hills enhance rainfall.
📌 Important Exam Point

The heavy rainfall of Meghalaya should be understood not merely from "monsoon arrival", but from the combined effect of moisture + wind direction + orographic ascent + local relief.

  2. Force moist air to rise.
  3. Increase rainfall on the southern slopes of the Himalayas.
  4. Help block extremely cold Central Asian winds.
  5. Influence the climate of the North Indian plains.

Orographic Rainfall in Rajasthan — Important Exception

In Rajasthan, the orientation of the Aravalli range is extremely important with respect to the monsoon. Its general direction is roughly SW to NE. The SW monsoon winds also blow SW to NE. Hence, the Aravalli does not form an effective perpendicular barrier to monsoon winds as the Western Ghats do. Consequently, the Aravalli does not produce a widespread, Western-Ghats-like orographic rainfall effect in Rajasthan.

Cyclonic Rainfall

Western Disturbances are generally extra-tropical cyclonic systems associated with the mid-latitude westerly belt. They can cause winter rainfall in Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, parts of Rajasthan, and western Uttar Pradesh. In the Himalayas, the same system is also important for snowfall.

West Coast | NE India | Ganga Plains | Rain Shadow | 4 Belts

The distribution of rainfall in India is extremely uneven. This is due not only to the direction of monsoon winds, but also to distance from the sea, mountain barriers, wind direction, relief, rain shadow, monsoon branches, and local low-pressure/cyclonic systems.

Main Spatial Pattern

From high rainfall in the east and north-east, rainfall decreases towards the west and north-west. Especially in the Ganga plains, the Bay of Bengal branch gradually loses moisture as it moves west.

Less Rain Westward

Hence, the eastern Ganga plain is generally more humid than the western Ganga plain.

Heavy Rainfall on the West Coast

Heavy Rain

Hence, the western coastal strip is among India's high-rainfall regions.

Why Does Rainfall Decrease East of the Western Ghats?

Rainfall Decreases

This region is called a rain shadow region.

  1. Very moist winds from the Bay of Bengal.
  2. Entry of monsoon winds towards the north-east.
  3. Relief of the Khasi-Jaintia and Garo hills.
  4. Strong ascent of air.
  5. Local convergence and convectional activity.
📌 Special Exam Point

Cherrapunji and Mawsynram are famous for very heavy rainfall. But instead of memorising "highest rainfall in India", it is more important to understand — moisture + wind direction + strong slope + local relief together produce very heavy rainfall.

Influence of the Himalayas on Rainfall Distribution

First Effect
Blocks monsoon winds from moving north and helps them ascend.
Second Effect
Limits direct entry of extremely cold Central Asian continental winds into India.

Thus, the Himalayas play a significant role in India's climate in monsoon + rainfall + temperature — all three.

Rajasthan — Extremely Uneven Rainfall Distribution

South-east/southern Rajasthan receives more rainfall; western/north-western Rajasthan receives less.

High Rainfall Zone
SE Rajasthan, Eastern Rajasthan (60–80 cm)
Low Rainfall Zone
Western Rajasthan (below 20 cm) — Desert

Reasons for Low Rainfall in Rajasthan

  1. The Bay of Bengal branch loses moisture while moving westward.
  2. The influence of the Arabian Sea branch weakens as it approaches Rajasthan.
  3. The Aravalli orientation does not form an effective perpendicular barrier for monsoon winds.
  4. Continental and desert conditions of western Rajasthan.
  5. Very high rainfall uncertainty.

Paradoxical Effect of the Aravalli

The general direction of the Aravalli range is SW to NE. The main direction of SW monsoon winds is also broadly SW to NE. Hence, the Aravalli does not form a nearly perpendicular wall in the wind path like the Western Ghats. Consequently, the Aravalli has a limited ability to lift, on a large scale, the winds coming from the Arabian Sea branch. This is important for understanding the aridity of western Rajasthan.

Rainfall Distribution in the Ganga Plains

Rainfall in the Ganga plains generally decreases from east to west, because the monsoon winds of the Bay of Bengal branch move east to west and progressively lose moisture as they rain.

पश्चिम बंगाल/बिहार West Bengal/Bihar → पूर्वी उत्तर प्रदेश Eastern UP → पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश Western UP → वर्षा में कमी Decreasing Rain

Rainfall Distribution in South India

Western Part
Heavy rain due to Arabian Sea branch
East of Western Ghats
Relatively less rain due to rain shadow
Important exception — main rain from NE monsoon
⚠️ Myth

"Tamil Nadu receives maximum rainfall from the SW monsoon." — This generalised statement is false. Correct understanding — SW monsoon has relatively low influence in Tamil Nadu; the NE monsoon is the most important rainfall source for Tamil Nadu.

Rainfall Distribution and Distance

With increasing distance from the sea, continentality generally increases, but the amount of rainfall in India cannot be determined on the basis of distance from the sea alone.

📌 Correct Formula

Distance from Sea + Wind Direction + Relief + Moisture + Cyclonic Activity = Rainfall Distribution

Rainfall Uncertainty

Temporal Distribution of Rainfall

Total annual rainfall alone is not sufficient. For a region's agriculture and water resources, it is also important when the rain occurred. If the total annual rainfall is adequate, but there is a long monsoon break or an uneven distribution of rain, water stress can occur on crops.

📌 Write in Exam

Writing "amount of rainfall" and "reliability/temporal distribution of rainfall" as separate concepts is more effective.

ENSO and the Indian Monsoon

ENSO is an important oceanic-atmospheric phenomenon associated with the Pacific Ocean and atmospheric circulation. It has two main phases — El Niño and La Niña.

(El Niño)
🌡️ El Niño

Sea surface temperature in the central and eastern tropical Pacific is higher than normal. Generally, it may increase the probability of a weaker Indian monsoon.

(La Niña)
❄️ La Niña

Sea surface temperature is lower than normal. Generally, it may increase the probability of a stronger Indian monsoon.

⚠️ Myth

"Every El Niño year certainly brings drought in India." — False. El Niño can be an important factor weakening the Indian monsoon, but the Indian monsoon is not controlled by ENSO alone.

Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)

A phenomenon related to the unequal difference in sea surface temperature between the western and eastern Indian Ocean.

सकारात्मक IOD
Positive IOD
Western Indian Ocean relatively warm and parts of the eastern Indian Ocean relatively cool. This can support the Indian monsoon.
नकारात्मक IOD
Negative IOD
The opposite thermal tendency. It can be relatively unfavourable for the Indian monsoon.

ENSO + IOD

Understanding ENSO + IOD Together

Suppose — El Niño has a negative effect on the monsoon, but a positive IOD supports the monsoon; then El Niño's effect can be somewhat weakened. Therefore, relying on a single oceanic index to understand the Indian monsoon is not appropriate.

MJO और मानसून

MJO and the Monsoon

The Madden-Julian Oscillation is a major intra-seasonal system of atmospheric convection and rainfall that moves eastward in the tropical belt. Its time scale is generally considered important on the order of a few weeks to about 30–60 days.

If favourable conditions develop over the Indian Ocean region, convection, monsoon activity, and rainfall may increase.

When the monsoon is more active than normal and good rainfall occurs in many regions, it is called an active monsoon. In this, favourable position of the monsoon trough, adequate moisture, convectional activity, and monsoon depressions/low-pressure systems play important roles.

Monsoon Break

When rainfall activity becomes significantly weak for some days during the monsoon season, it is called a monsoon break.

⚠️ Very Important

Break = Temporary weakening during the monsoon season
Retreat = Seasonal process towards the end of the monsoon season

Effect of Break on Agriculture

If the break is long, rainfall deficit, soil moisture deficit, crop water stress, and increased irrigation demand can occur. But if heavy rain occurs between breaks, the total seasonal rainfall may remain normal. Therefore, not only total rainfall but also the temporal distribution of rainfall is important for agriculture.

Monsoon Depressions

Low pressure systems and monsoon depressions forming over the Bay of Bengal are important for rainfall distribution in India. Their general movement — Bay of Bengal → Eastern India → Central India → towards NW/West. Changes in their number, path, and intensity affect monsoon rainfall.

Part 12 — Monsoon Uncertainty, Drought and Flood in India
4 Drought Types | Flood Causes | Management | Structural/Non-structural

The most important consequence of monsoon variability is rainfall uncertainty. In India, the problem is not only that total annual rainfall was more or less in a given year, but also when, where, with what intensity, and at what intervals the rain occurred. This is why, in the same year, opposite conditions like drought in some regions and flood in others can arise.

Meaning of Monsoon Uncertainty

When there is significant deviation from the normal state in the monsoon's arrival, retreat, rainfall amount, timing, intensity, and spatial distribution, it is understood in the broader context of monsoon uncertainty.

Why is Total Rainfall Alone Insufficient to Evaluate the Monsoon?

Suppose a region had normal total rainfall throughout the monsoon. Even then, two situations are possible —

Situation 1
Rainfall occurred relatively evenly throughout the four months.
Situation 2
A large part of total rainfall fell in a few days, and the rest of the time had a long break.

Total rainfall in both can be the same, but the effects on agriculture, water conservation, and floods will be completely different.

Flood Condition

When the water in an area exceeds the available drainage capacity and spreads over the land, a flood condition arises. The monsoon is the most important seasonal cause of floods in India. But floods do not occur only from excess rainfall.

Extreme Rainfall and Flash Flood

Sudden, very heavy rainfall in a short time can rapidly cause waterlogging. In mountainous regions, intense rainfall + steep slope + narrow valleys can increase the risk of sudden floods. This is called a flash flood.

How Can Drought and Flood Occur Together?

Suppose — the monsoon was weak in June, a long break occurred in July, and very heavy rain occurred in a few days of August. Then, agricultural water stress in June-July and sudden floods in August — both are possible in the same monsoon season.

💡 Core Argument for a 10-Mark Answer

India's problem is not just the amount of rainfall, but its spatial, temporal, and intensity-related distribution. Monsoon breaks and low rainfall can produce agricultural and hydrological drought, while short-duration extreme rainfall, river discharge, cyclonic systems, and urbanisation can increase floods. Therefore, the solution requires integrated use of watershed management, rainwater harvesting, floodplain regulation, micro-irrigation, early warning, and climate-resilient agriculture.

India's agriculture, water availability, and rural economy are deeply affected by the monsoon. Since most of India's rainfall is received during a limited monsoon period, the quantity, timing, distribution, and variability of the monsoon determine the state of agriculture and water resources.

Hence, excessive delay or a long initial break at the start of the monsoon can affect Kharif agriculture.

For Rabi agriculture, the monsoon's influence is mainly through soil moisture and reservoir/groundwater recharge. In addition, winter rainfall from western disturbances in north-west India can be important for Rabi crops, including wheat.

Monsoon and Groundwater

The monsoon is an important source of groundwater recharge.

Groundwater Recharge

But not all rainfall goes into groundwater. It depends on — soil, rock, land slope, vegetation, rainfall intensity, and land use.

Why Doesn't Excess Rainfall Always Cause Greater Groundwater Recharge?

If very heavy rain falls in a short time — high rainfall intensity, high surface runoff, the infiltration ratio can drop. This may increase flooding, but groundwater recharge does not increase proportionally everywhere.

Monsoon and Reservoirs

Irrigation/Drinking/Hydro

The impact of a weak monsoon can reach irrigation, drinking water, and hydro-power sectors.

Monsoon and Hydropower

Hydropower generation depends on the flow of rivers and reservoirs. However, actual generation also depends on reservoir management, electricity demand, and other technical factors.

Monsoon and Drinking Water Security

In both rural and urban areas, the monsoon is important for water security. If a weak monsoon continues, reservoir levels and groundwater recharge can decline, increasing the risk of a drinking water crisis.

Monsoon and Crop Selection

Farmers choose crops based on the region's climate and rainfall. In low-rainfall areas, crops with low water requirements may become more important; in high-rainfall areas, crops with high water availability have better prospects. But crop selection is not determined by rainfall alone — soil + temperature + market + irrigation + tradition + technology are also important.

Monsoon and Crop Diversification

In regions with uncertain monsoons, crop diversification can help reduce risk. Example — a diversified farming system of cereals + pulses + oilseeds + fodder can reduce water and income risk.

Process of Loo

Effects — Dehydration, heat stroke, health risks, thermal stress on agriculture.

Relationship between Loo and the monsoon — Extreme heating of NW India in summer contributes to the development of a thermal low there. Thus, Loo is not only a health-related phenomenon but also an expression of the broad summer thermal circulation.

October Heat

During the retreat of the south-west monsoon, warm and humid conditions are experienced in many parts of India in October.

Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ)

The zone where NE and SE trade winds converge. It is not stationary. Its position shifts north-south seasonally with the apparent movement of the sun.

Role of ITCZ in the Indian Monsoon

In summer, with greater heating of the northern hemisphere landmass, it generally shifts northward. In the Indian context, the northward shift of the ITCZ supports the development of the monsoon low-pressure zone and supports the SW monsoon circulation. In the Indian monsoon, its position is often linked to the development of the monsoon trough.

Source of Cross-Equatorial Flow

The high-pressure region developed in the southern Indian Ocean — the Mascarene High — plays an important role in the development of this flow. Air flows from the southern hemisphere towards the low-pressure Asian region.

Role of the Coriolis Force

After crossing the equator, air enters the northern hemisphere. In the northern hemisphere, due to the Coriolis force, the flow direction bends to the right. Consequently, winds coming from the south take the form of SW monsoon winds.
