(Force)

F = ma

जहाँ F = बल (Newton), m = द्रव्यमान (kg), a = त्वरण (m/s²)

2.1 Motion and Force — Newton's Laws of Motion

Motion

A change in the position of an object with time is called motion.

Types of motion
TypeDescriptionExample
Linear motionMotion in a straight lineA car moving on a road
Circular motionMotion along a circular pathThe Earth orbiting the Sun
Periodic motionMotion repeating at regular intervalsThe motion of a pendulum
Random motionIrregular, unpredictable motionThe motion of clouds
Force

Force is that which changes, or tends to change, the state of rest or motion of an object.

5 effects of force

  1. Setting an object in motion (from rest to motion)
  2. Stopping an object (from motion to rest)
  3. Changing the direction of an object's motion
  4. Increasing or decreasing the speed of motion
  5. Changing the shape of an object

Newton's laws of motion

Newton's First Law (Law of Inertia)

"Every object remains in its state of rest, or of uniform motion in a straight line, unless acted upon by an external force."

Daily-life examples of Newton's First Law
ExampleExplanation
Falling backward when a bus starts suddenlyThe body tends to stay at rest
Falling forward when a bus stops suddenlyThe body tends to stay in motion
Shaking a wet clothThe cloth stops, but the water continues moving
Seat belts in a carStop the body from moving forward when the car stops suddenly
Important

Inertia is the property due to which an object remains in its state. Inertia is directly related to mass — more mass = more inertia.

Newton's Second Law (Law of Force)

"The force applied on an object is proportional to the rate of change of its momentum, and the direction of the force is along the direction of the change in momentum."

F = ma

where F = force (Newton), m = mass (kg), a = acceleration (m/s²)

Examples of Newton's Second Law
ExampleExplanation
Pushing a heavy object is difficultMore mass → more force needed
Pushing a light object is easyLess mass → less force needed
Throwing a ball hardMore force → more acceleration → more distance
Newton's Third Law (Law of Action-Reaction)

"For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."

Examples of Newton's Third Law
ExampleActionReaction
WalkingFoot pushes the ground backwardGround pushes the foot forward
SwimmingHand pushes water backwardWater pushes the body forward
A rocket launchingBurning fuel releases gas backwardGas pushes the rocket forward
A balloon deflatingAir rushes out of the balloonThe balloon moves in the opposite direction

2.2 Energy — Types, Conservation, Conversion

Energy

Energy is the capacity to do work. Its SI unit is the joule (J).

Major forms of energy
Form of energyDescriptionExample

Thermal energyEnergy due to heatHot water, fire
Chemical energyEnergy stored in chemical bondsFood, batteries
Electrical energyEnergy from the flow of chargesElectricity, a bulb
Light energyEnergy from light wavesThe Sun, lasers
Sound energyEnergy from sound wavesMusic, voice
Nuclear energyEnergy from the nucleus of an atomNuclear reactors
The Law of Conservation of Energy

"Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be converted from one form to another."

Examples of energy conversion in daily life
ActivityEnergy conversion
Lighting a bulbElectrical → light + heat
Running a motorElectrical → mechanical
Digesting foodChemical → thermal + mechanical
Heating waterThermal → thermal (raising temperature)
A nuclear reactorNuclear → thermal → mechanical → electrical

2.3 Relationship Between Work, Power and Energy

Work

Work is done when a force applied to an object displaces it in the direction of the force.

W = F × d

where W = work (Joule), F = force (Newton), d = displacement (metre)

Important

If displacement is zero, work done is zero. Example: pushing a wall (zero displacement, hence zero work).

Power

The rate of doing work is called power. Its SI unit is the watt (W).

P = W/t

where P = power (Watt), W = work (Joule), t = time (second)

The work-energy relationship

Work-energy theorem: the amount of work done on an object equals the change in its kinetic energy.

Kinetic Energy

KE = ½mv²

m = mass (kg), v = velocity (m/s)

Potential Energy

PE = mgh

m = mass (kg), g = 9.8 m/s², h = height (m)

Important for the RAS exam

Questions on the work-energy relationship may draw on everyday examples.

Reflection

Reflection is the bouncing back of light into the same medium after striking a surface.

Laws of reflection

  1. The incident ray, reflected ray and the normal all lie in the same plane
  2. The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection

Refraction

The bending of light as it passes from one medium to another is called refraction.

Laws of refraction — Snell's Law

  1. The incident ray, refracted ray and the normal all lie in the same plane
  2. The ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the angle of refraction is constant

sin i / sin r = μ (constant)
